Brazilian Melons

I learned something interesting... actually, no, I didn't learn anything new, but was surprised, so I thought I'd share it. However, the story starts with two bits of background information: I always turn "search safe" off in Google images, and I bought a neat looking melon at Costco yesterday. (Yes, that combination will probably have you cringing already...)

Anyhow, I wanted to know what the hell this melon was. It's three-tone-green with yellow stripes, and is shaped like a rugby ball, with the only sticker on it that makes any sense telling me the fruit comes from Brazil. I did what anyone else would do: I googled "Brazil melon". Most of the hits I got didn't seem right, so I clicked on "images".

Let me tell you, without search safe on, that isn't work safe. While I didn't find anything that looked like the fruit I've got here, I did get a lot of brazilian shemale melons...

It sounds like you bought one of Costcos seedless watermelons. There should have been a sign above the melons indicating what they are and the price. They carry several melons imported from Brazil: Brazilian Melon - looks like a honeydew with a smooth yellow hull and has green, very juicy and sweet flesh
Honeydews - smooth white husk, white, sweet flesh
Cantaloupes (or -lopes)- rough hull, sweet orange flesh
If this doesn't square with what you got, then I suggest going back to Costco and looking at the display.

Thanks for the comment.

I posted this over a year ago - Costco certainly doesn't have them anymore. And, for the record, I know what honeydews, cantaloupes and watermellons look like. This wasn't any of the above.

Meant to mention that the Brazilian melon is also known as "the yellow honeydew". And the seedless watermelons sold at Costco are also imported from Brazil. They are round, no bigger than a football but are yellow and green striped just like the bigger watermelons, flesh is red and very sweet and juicy.

All I can say is that whatever the melon was, it wasn't a honeydew or a watermelon. At least, not a cultivar that I've ever seen before.

Alas, in trying to figure this out, I plugged "melons from brazil" back into google...

I realize this is an old post but in case someone comes across it, the melon is a "Santa Claus" melon. No, I am not making up the name...google it and you will see for yourself.

The internet rocks - I'd long ago lost hope I'd ever find out what that melon was. Thanks!
